The Alpine media scene
A few facts to consider
The Alps feature a rich media landscape with about 800 newspaper and their regional editions, some 40 specialised magazines.
The readers
Some figures to bear in mind when choosing your communication channels:
80% of readers (between 14-60 years) read and are interested in local and/or national news, to a lesser extend in international news, culture, and less than 30% in science.
Credibility
Regarding credibility and quality of news, printed media and press are still considered the most reliable media:
67% for paper press; 27% for TV; 6% for internet
Expert journalists
The level of ‘Alpine expertise’ varies largely among journalists. Next to many generalists there are about 20 to 50 experts on Alpine topics. Before contacting them: read their article, to enter into a dialogue and even get their opinion.
Building media relations
It needs work to make journalists your partner, they will not just distribute your information automatically. Given frequent changes within a pressurised international journalist scene confronted with a wealth of information it may be challenging to build up those partnerships. Find that specialist journalist in your area and make the local and regional media your partner. A good article might be fed into other channels. And not to forget, build on media expertise among your project partners and use their established media services. Tell them your story when the topic is hot, they will be glad to hear about a hands-on project and ask the what is behind..
