The S3-4AlpClusters project partners met in Salzburg on October 19-20 for the third project steering group meeting. The meeting notably served as an opportunity to share and discuss the project results with the observers and the members of the advisory board.
The importance of the interplay between clusters and S3 has been confirmed through the first activities of the project. A StressTest and a report on strategic alpine space areas for cross-regional cooperation provide a strong rationale for cluster-based regional development policy.
However, the involvement of clusters as a tool in the implementation of S3 varies considerably across regions. Alignment between the S3 of neighbouring regions is very limited. In addition, the S3 of the analysed regions tend to be very broad in scope and do not sufficiently focus on real transformative activities. The transmission of the opportunities for innovation from the strategic (S3) to the cluster and business level remains a challenge for the regions of the Alpine Space.
The upcoming activities of the project aim at addressing this challenge by developing a functioning innovation model for clusters and businesses based on the tools designed during the first phase of the project (Entrepreneurial Discovery Workshops, Synergy-Diamonds, Cluster Workshops, Best Practices).
