The aims

Project summary

At present, the Alpine Space is characterised by strong territorial discrepancies with regard to (conventional) energy supply. Rich endogenous renewable energy sources (RES) like hydropower, solar and wind energy, wood and other biomass exist throughout the Alpine Space. But equal access to their use is even more restricted because the use and the need to balance electricity production requires a strong electric grid and its – often unacceptable – extension or strengthening if the rate of RES is to be increased.

Virtual Power Systems (VPS) offer an alternative by using ICT technology for intelligent combinations of RES, load management and storage. A prerequisite are innovative ways of cooperation among utilities, independent power producers and consumers. VPS have a high potential to trigger new knowledge-based and competitive economic activities. AlpEnergy will explore this potential and sensitise political and business decision makers.

Status

A common discussion paper “white book” (common view, terminology & model for VPS) is finalised and already a common base for discussions with stake-holders and partners. All partners are working on their regional analyses as well as the regional models and VPS master plans. The first project results are communicated at international events like the successful Opening Conference in Kempten (Allgäu region, Germany) with over 200 participants. In the cause of this conference the AlpEnergy Partners and stakeholders in the German Lighthouse project "E-Energy" fruitfully exchanged experiences. The international knowledge transfer was fostered by events like the Study Tour through Allgäu region with the the French project partners.

Implemented activities and (interim) results

The common discussion paper “white book” (common view, terminology & model for VPS) is far elaborated and already a common base for discussions with stake-holders and partners. All partners are working on their regional analyses as well as the regional models and VPS master plans. The first project results are communicated at international events.

Outlook

The international visibility of the AlpEnergy project will rise with the opening conference in the Allgäu region in May 2009. Up to then the AlpEnergy partnership will have grown by two new Italian partners that will enrich the whole project approach. In the near future the conceptional phase with analyses and modelling will be finished and the project work will focus on design and development as well as the testing of regional VPS modells.
