Valorisation of innovative bio-economical potentials along bio-based food & botanical extract value chains in the Alpine Space

Bioeconomy breakfast and welcome session


The EU-Interreg AlpBioEco project had the valorisation of innovative bioeconomical potentials in the Alpine Space at its centre. Thus, the focus of the AlpBioEco final conference was also on bioeconomy and innovation. To start easy in the day, the conference started with a bioeconomy breakfast, which gave the participants the chance to connect and discuss.

In the following welcome session, Anna Bäuerle, project coordinator for AlpBioEco, officially opened the conference. After shortly introducing the project, she gave over to Dr. Marcus Ehm, mayor of the City of Sigmaringen, who stated that the City of Sigmaringen is very proud to be part of the project: “AlpBioEco ends in April 2021, but we will continue to promote bioeconomy in the region.”

Following this warm introduction, Primoz Skrt, Project Officer at the Joint Secretariat Interreg Alpine Space Programme, addressed the audience. He was with AlpBioEco from the beginning and recounted how he came to Sigmaringen for the take-off meeting of the project – since then, a lot has happened: “By now, the AlpBioEco project developed many important results, from the bioeconomy business models up to the policy guidelines. Most importantly, the AlpBioEco project was based on transnational cooperation and thus contributed to European cohesion.”

Anna Bäuerle then introduced the AlpBioEco project more in detail, explaining the different work packages and the main results for the project. During the project, AlpBioEco focused on the three Alpine value chains of apples, herbs and walnuts. First, those value chains were analysed, and then several business model ideas were developed, resulting in seven eco-innovative business model blueprints (two for each value chain, and one overarching digital platform). Anna Bäuerle then moderated an open discussion, where participants could ask questions.
