Increasing RES uptake through Microgrids in the Alps

Project partners

Project involves 12 project partners from 5 EU Member States and is led by Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Energy Environment Agency (AURA-EE). All partners have had previous experiences of participating to EU territorial cooperation.

LP AURA EE - Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Energy Environment Agency

AURA-EE is the Energy and Environment Agency of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region. The Agency supports the regional and local public authorities as well as project developers in their development and implementation of sustainable energy policies and projects. AURA-EE has developed a strong expertise in sustainable energy projects implementing distributed RES and smart grids in particular in rural areas working with energy communities, project developers and decision makers. The Agency is involved at EU level through EU networks like FEDARENE, EU initiatives, Covenant of Mayors and at Macro-regional level as EUSALP AG9 co-leader. It will ensure both networks are fully informed about the project’s activities and disseminate the project’s results both at Alpine and EU levels.

PP IRE spa - Regional Agency for Infrastructures, building Renovation and Energy of Liguria

IRE is the Technical Agency of Liguria Region, with its Energy Department specifically dealing with energy policies, recommendations and projects. IRE's Energy Department has experience in engaging Municipalities on energy, raising awareness, building capacity and promoting the implementation of energy and smart projects. IRE is expert on the topic of smart city, participating in FP7 " TRANSFORM" on smart urban districts integrated planning, the H2020 Smart City "Unalab" demonstrating innovative nature-based solutions in urban areas and the recently started Climate KIC "SUSHI" project on smart city in historical urban areas. IRE has also specific know-how on innovative financing schemes for energy transition, such as EIB-ELENA. IRE has a strong partnership with its shareholder University of Genova, and in particular with Savona Campus, specialised in the energy field and internationally renowned for its smart-grid expertise: it features the first Smart Polygeneration Microgrid in Italy.

PP W.E.I.Z. - Energy and Innovation Centre of Weiz

W.E.I.Z. is a subsidy of the Municipality of Weiz and a non-profit organization. It is one out of 33 so called “impulse centers” in Styria. The focus of the W.E.I.Z. was set on “innovation” and “energy”, especially renewable energy and energy efficiency. It has been involved in more than 50 regional and international projects. Since 2008 W.E.I.Z. has been offering neutral energy services. The service range actually covers four main fields: energy consultancy & awareness raising, energy certificates, thermograph analysis and funding consultancy. W.E.I.Z. is a regional incoming point for enterprises, municipalities and private people. In 2011 W.E.I.Z. has become an official “Styrian Energy Agency”. Therefore the W.E.I.Z. can not only bring in its expertise and knowledge, it also has a wide network and very good access to the target groups of ALPGRIDS. It will coordinate the pilot activities in its territory.

PP ENERGAP - Energy Agency of Podravje - Institution for sustainable energy use

ENERGAP is a public Energy Agency with 14 years of experience in local RES and energy efficiency policies. It is the energy manager for the Municipality of Maribor, the second biggest municipality in Slovenia, and more than 15 municipalities in the region. ENERGAP has cooperated in more than 20 EU projects. The Agency doubles as the RES and energy efficiency education centre and the expert contact point. It works with both, the public and private sector to mobilize them to the use of clean energies. It cooperates with the University of Maribor in the field of micro-grids and implemented PEGASUS project that dealt with the microgrids. ENERGAP will actively contribute to the interregional learning process, knowledge and experience exchange of the project. As an expert body it will analyse actions and measures in the partner regions.

PP 4ER -  4ward Energy Research Ltd

The research facility 4ward Energy Research GmbH (4ER) is an NGO for the benefit of the public in the sector of energy research, both at national and international level. 4ER is very experienced concerning micro and smart grids. A lot of projects (surveys, demonstration etc.) have been carried out in this context as there is a lot of technical expertise available. 4ER will support the project in all micro grid relevant issues. The staff was and is involved in numerous scientific energy projects (>100). Therefore, a high level of expertise in the field of energy technologies, power engineering and energy industry is available. Several projects with the same project focus have been carried out. Thus, the research facility is very familiar with the project area. 4ER will provide horizontal competences on energy innovation, ICT and building consensus.

PP DeMEPA - Design and Management of Electrical Power Assets

DeMEPA is an experienced engineering and advisers’ firm that offers its services to Public Companies, Institutions and Market Players in the modernization of the Power Sector, with focus on Transmission & Distribution networks. It has experience working in developing countries (China, India, Turkey, and Croatia) and developed countries (Italy, Spain, France, South Korea). DeMEPA performed studies on microgrids and has a starring role in the preparation/implementation of MED PEGASUS project, especially on the identification of successful business model of microgrids in the MED Space. In this project, DeMEPA leads the preparation of the pilot projects: providing know-how in order to simulate the microgrids functions and assess the other achievable benefits in term of savings, environmental and economic issues. DeMEPA will lead the dialogue with Energy Regulatory Agencies and between the Energy Agencies/National Institutions. DeMEPA is competent on microgrids and power T&D.

PP BAUM - B.A.U.M. Consult GmbH München

BAUM supports enterprises, LRAs and governmental institutions with consultancy, R&D, raising awareness and training on sustainable development, smart energy & mobility. BAUM manages R&D projects/programs, organizes knowledge platforms and events on behalf of governmental and trade associations. BAUM has been responsible for the Ancillary Research for the E-Energy program and developed tools for the assessment of Smart and Micro Grid solutions. Besides being involved in international projects (see below), BAUM has been and still is a partner in several German and Austrian R&D projects on Smart Energy Systems (e.g. PolyEnergNet, Gridcon, OptNetzE, WindNODE, SMARTIES, SESAM) to evaluate the results of Smart Grid trial sites on socio-economic/ecological impacts, to monitor the process, to derive legal, technical and market requirements and communicate these to authorities. BAUM Executive Karg is a member of ETIP SNET and employees represent Germany in international Smart Grid initiatives.

PP ROTH - Rothmoser GmbH & Co. KG

ROTH is the distribution net operator in Grafing, a village with 15.000 inhabitants 30 km east of Munich. Rothmoser is a family business founded at the introduction of electricity in Grafing in 1899. ROTH also operates a district heating net that covers a few hundred households and community facilities. The development of the district heating net was started more than 10 years ago and is growing every year. Several CHP plants and a biogas plant are part of the energy supply system in Grafing. Approx. 30 percent of the electric energy demand is generated by Rothmoser, the rest is supplied by the transmission system operator.

PP CNR - Compagnie Nationale du Rhône

CNR is France’s leading producer of exclusively renewable energy and the concessionary of the Rhone River for hydroelectricity production, river transport and irrigation for agricultural uses. As an industrial company whose capital is evenly shared between public and private actors, CNR works for the well-being and the development of the territories. Solidarity lies at the heart of CNR’s actions and it is actively involved in the development of renewable energies (hydroelectricity, solar energy and wind power), in support of territorial development and energy transition. Through innovative energy projects, CNR is also involved in domains linked to microgrid projects: intelligent intermittent production managing and exploiting, innovative production methods such as floating solar power plants, renewable hydrogen production…

CNR benefits from a strong local anchorage, that will be used in the ALPGRIDS project along with our expertise in RES, to facilitate RES integration at a local level. CNR takes part in this project as coordinator of one of the pilot sites and for the definition of an economic model for microgrids.

PP UDINE - Municipality of Udine

In the last years UDINE has been a forerunner on sustainability issues, such as implementation of retrofit actions on buildings; improvement of local regulations with energy efficiency and sustainability aspects; participatory processes, communication campaigns; EU initiatives (CoM) and participation at EU projects. Udine is part of Urban Agenda for EU working group on Energy Transition. It is aware that innovative solutions on energy grids should be introduced at building and urban areas level. Issues the project could help to deal with are: knowledge on how microgrids work, good practices easy to be applied, common tools for application of technical solutions. Udine will act as a driver of pilot innovation and stimulate awareness of microgrids. It will allow to progressively improve regulation and policy framework towards a new way to face energy transition. Udine will improve its leading role in raising public awareness in other public authorities and community-based stakeholders.

PP SELNICA - Municipality Selnica ob Dravi

SELNICA OB DRAVI is a community with 4.600 inhabitants in Drava valley at east end of Alps. It is rural area with Drava river with the oldest hydropower station in south east Europe. In 2019 municipal council accepted the approach towards the sustainable development and a vision to be the healthiest municipality in the region till 2050. It includes that municipality will implement only the projects that are in line with sustainable goals of Agenda 2030. Part of it are also sustainable energy projects. In 2010 municipality received the awards as the most energy efficiency municipality in Slovenia. It already has a PV on the primary school’s roof. Future projects include the PV for waste water treatment plan and for village fire brigade centre. Within the project municipality would like to share the experiences and knowledge how to foster the implementation of RES and how to be self-sufficient also in different climate disasters.

PP UNIGE - University of Genoa

The Service Centre for the management of Ventimiglia, Imperia and Savona campuses (CenVIS) is the structure of UGINE devoted to the management of Savona Campus, a decentralized research and teaching facility of the University of Genoa. Savona Campus characterizes itself for its research activities in the sustainable energy sector. It is worth mentioning the “Energy 2020” Project (www.energia2020.unige.it) of the University of Genova, an important R&DD project related to Sustainable Energy and Smart City. The project was designed to implement within the Campus innovative energy systems aimed at reducing operating costs, CO2 emissions and, at the same time, creating a comfort working environment for Campus users. Two important Research Infrastructures (RIs) were created: a Smart Microgrid and a Smart Energy Building. CenVIS has in charge the management and the promotional activities of these RIs on which several research projects are ongoing.
