Strategic tools towards a sustainable use of biomass for low carbon domestic heating

European Union (Interreg Alpine Space)

The Alpine Space programme is a European transnational cooperation programme for the Alpine region.

The programme is financed through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as well as through national public and private co-funding of the Partner States. The ERDF co-financing rate is 85% and the programme is investing 1.415.858  in BB-CLEAN project. 


UCSC - Catholic University of the Sacred heart

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is one of the most important Catholic universities in Europe. Founded in Milan in 1921 by Father Agostino Gemelli, UCSC has 4 campuses in Milan, Rome, Brescia and Piacenza-Cremona, 12 faculties, 40.000 students and a teaching staff of more than 1.350. Just a few figures illustrate the breadth and depth of the University's core curriculum, in both humanities and sciences: 41 three-year degree programmes, 42 two years graduate programmes, 6 intensive-study degree programmes, 50 schools of specialization, more than 100 master degree programmes, 19 PhD schools and 8 graduate schools. Research activity draws on 38 institutes, 28 departments and 80 research centres, plus another 5 centres at the University, and is aimed towards the study and understanding of issues crucial to life and society: new frontiers in economics and bioethics, the recovery of cultural assets, changes in the field of law, family trends, the phenomenon of the mass media, the development of political systems, the aims of medicine, technological applications of mathematics and physics, and the most recent discoveries in environmental research. 

ARPA VdA - Regional Environmental Protection Agency of the Valle d`Aosta

The Regional Environmental Protection Agency of Aosta Valley (ARPA VDA) is an instrumental body of the Aosta Valley Autonomous Region. The Air and Atmosphere Office is in charge of monitoring the air quality in Aosta Valley, operating within the regulatory framework which derive from the European guidelines. These are the main functions of the activity carried out:

• to check the air quality through the measurement systems of the Regional Monitoring Network

• to interpret and explain pollution phenomena even with the use of modeling tools

• to inform citizens and to provide support for environmental education activities

The Energy Office is aimed to give technical and scientific support to Regional Administration, specifically on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources development and to provide technical verification of thermal plants efficiency and building EPCs (energy performance certificates). ARPA VdA has participated in 23 projects funded by the EU.

CCPMB - Mont-Blanc Community of Municipalities

The CCPMB is a public authority regrouping 10 municipalities located in the Northern French Alps. Environmental protection, transport, territorial development and waste management are some of the fields that fall under its responsibility. The CCPMB has been working actively on air and climate issues as air quality is often degraded in winter on its territory. It carries out environmental awareness campaigns and recently launched the elaboration of its Climate Air Energy Plan. Two pilot actions are also in progress to reduce the impact of biomass combustion on air quality: specific subventions for wood craftsmen companies and the implementation of an air ambassador program to raise citizens’ awareness.

ATMO AuRA - Atmo Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 

Atmo Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is an observatory approved by the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development, and Energy to monitor and provide information about air quality in the AURA Region, with 5 missions:

  • OBSERVE AQ through a monitoring system that produces, collects, and disseminates benchmark data.
  • HELP decision-makers develop and monitor medium/long-term action plans for AQ and related topics as well as emergency situations.
  • INFORM citizens and encourage them to act at improving AQ.
  • PLAN AHEAD while integrating emerging issues related to atmospheric pollution and new technologies through partnerships (part of experiments, innovative initiatives, and EU programs).
  • MANAGE the organization’s strategy and regional coordination and share resources to ensure consistency with national guidelines.

KSSENA - Energy Agency of Savinjska, Šaleška and Koroška Region

KSSENA offers a substantial amount of expertise relevant to the project proposal, gained trough the successful implementation of numerous activities in the field of energy efficiency, exploitation of renewable energy sources and energy management of local communities. The Agency has experience in the development of local energy concepts, sustainable energy action plans as well as providing feedback on proposed national energy strategies. KSSENA will benefit from the outlined cooperation primarily by being able to contribute considerations that are relevant on the national/local level in Slovenia to the development of the policy action plans, ensuring the interest of their founders and client base are represented within these recommendations.

EZVD - E-Institute

The mission of the E-institute is to improve the citizen’s quality of life closely linked with sustainable development. Therefore we are focusing on environmental protection, innovative economy, social welfare and moral values. E-zavod follows major European and global trends and are trying to transform them into the applied projects performed on international and national level. Our goal is to introduce new trends and technologies in Slovenia and contribute to the openness of the country and its inhabitants. In the last 15 years E-zavod gained valuable experiences and deepened our knowledge in the field of sustainable development, energy efficiency, renewable energy, new forms of innovation and technology transfer, and in providing support for entrepreneurial environment.

FHJ - Institute of Energy, Transport and Environmental Management

FH JOANNEUM (FHJ) was established in 1995. With its 50 degree programmes in the area of Management & Technology, Architecture & Civil Engineering, Business, Information Engineering, Media & Design and Social & Health Services it is one of the leading universities of applied sciences in Austria. The company is a non-profit organisation and the majority shareholder is the Styrian Government. Research and development is a core area of activity for FHJ and the Institute of Energy, Mobility and Environmental Management. It carries out research with the aim of contributing to social development and solving complex problems and issues of our time. The highly qualified and experienced staff of FHJ is involved in a wide range of research projects, continually generating knowledge for the university, business and society.

ECONCEPT - Agency for Sustainable Design

We from Econcept understand us as enabler for all types of sustainable innovation and design for sustainability. Since more than 20 years are we supporting our clients around the world in developing environmentally friendly products, concepts, designs and visionary scenarios. We have assembled an extensive Ecodesign toolbox that we use as needed. We have been appointed by various companies and political organizations as experts and have done various sustainability projects (i.a. EC,Federal German Research Ministry, EPO, Worldbank). Further we have gathered detailed know-how and +10 years project experience on business model innovation (i.a. the famous St. Gallen Business Model Navigator™). We further developed the first online crowdsourcing open innovation platform focusing on sustainability issues.
