Innovation and Quality in Dual Education

The objective is to innovate and increase the quality of dual education. A key factor in dual education are the teachers, in-company trainers and mentors. They need to be supported to continuously update their skills and competencies in order to respond to new technological and social realities.

Handbook on Innovative Practices in Dual Education

Improving educational systems requires rethinking what teachers do each day and this is particularly true with regard to dual education. Dual education systems are in fact complex systems where heterogeneous actors have to interact and coordinate together in order to guarantee the best learning experience possible.

The DuALPlus project represented a good occasion to study the key factors for bringing innovation and quality in dual education.

The presented Handbook is the result of this study. It outlines the key results of the research, evaluation as well as activities and best practice examples from the project.

The core of the document is threefold:
- Chapter 3 reports the results and recommendations from a need assessment/analysis addressed to SME representatives and aimed at investigating the key factors needed to ensure high-quality training for apprentices;
- Chapter 4 shows best-practice examples of innovative training activities and programmes in the EU as well as in the nine partner regions;
- Chapter 5 is about improved existing training formats and new programmes developed and partly already tested and evaluated by six of the project partners during the project lifetime. It is, in fact, our strong belief that there is no innovation without experimentation. The same chapter therefore ends with a proposal for an innovative tutor’s training programme partly based on the aforementioned experimentation and corresponding to current needs of potential apprentices, SMEs as well as the labour market.

Finally, the Handbook concludes with a summary of recommendations for innovative practices in dual education and includes an Annex where the regional best practices and the training formats are provided in the German, Italian, Slovenian and French languages.

SME Needs Assessments

This report provides an alpine wide perspective on the training needs of SMEs in the skilled crafts and trades regarding dual education, with particular focus on the perspective of the trainers. To generate a complete picture, we combined the data collection for the needs assessment analysis with the evaluation of existing dual education formats. This report presents results and findings of both activities.

Screening and Evaluation of Dual Training Programmes: Best Practices

Under the guidance of the work package leader NDU, the project partners researched for initiatives and best practices for dual training programmes in their countries which are summarised in this report. They also adopted a joint methodology to evaluate their own training programmes. The evaluation took place in connection with the data collection for the SME needs assessment report which therefore also presents issues relating to the evaluation. There will be a deeper evaluation of dual training formats in the form of a focus group discussion with members of the Communities of Practice. The results of the evaluations as well as of the SME needs assessment analysis will be the basis for the revision of existing, respectively the development of new dual training formats.

Dual Training Formats

Six partners developed innovative regional training formats based on previous research, either by improving existing trainings or by developing new ones. The trainings are directed at SMEs, trainers or youngsters. They will help these target groups to develop the skills to cope with continuous social, technological and organizational changes in the workplace. The trainings will also help the SMEs to reach out to new target groups like girls, NEETS, refugees, etc. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, single trainings have been only partly implemented and evaluated so far.

Under the Motto "Learning for Life" in the Montafon a holistic and innovative training concept for apprentices has been developed. It strengthens the expertise, social and self-competences of young people as an addition to the usual training in the company and vocational school.

The course "Skilled training for university students", developed in collaboration with cooperation partners, is designed as a consecutive model to enable students to complete a skilled worker qualification, which is not possible within the framework of the previous metal course of the Bachelor programme “Manual & Material Culture” at the New Design University (NDU) in St. Pölten.

The intention behind this innovative dual education programme was to make dual education accessible not just for secondary school leavers, but also for adults and so far socially deprived individuals such as refugees, school drop-outs, etc.

The programme sees the participation of representatives of SMEs as well as educational institutions and an expert facilitator that guides a heterogeneous group of actors to identify issues/challenges useful for their professional development, to describe and share their strategies and competences and finally integrate those strategies in order to produce a list of best practices to be suggested in the future.

Lvh has developed the concept "Fit for the Future" on the DuALPlus project issues, a workshop together with trainers and apprentices. The focus is on getting to know each other and clarifying open organizational questions.

The activities within this format aim to respond to the problems of installation, business development and people qualification; expand inflows into the sector in particular to promote the creation and recovery of quality companies in the medium term; organize and dedicate the academic recognition of the managerial training of craftsmen; as well as to promote the CMA's continuing education offer in a coherent and readable way.

Training Concept for In-company Tutors

Due to the decreasing number of school leavers and an increased tendency for university studies after school, it is becoming more and more difficult for handicraft enterprises to attract suitable apprentices. Nowadays, more and more apprentices come from marginal groups, such as school drop-outs, refugees or young people with learning difficulties. Dealing with these groups sets new requirements on the in-company tutors.

The DuALPlus partners developed an innovative training concept for in-company tutors in English, German, French, Slovene and Italian language, which aims to provide trainers with the necessary knowledge, skills and competences to attract trainees with very different backgrounds to an apprenticeship, to motivate them successfully during training and to accompany them successfully until its final accomplishment.
