Piedmont Region is defining an ecosystem-based approach for sustainable planning and management of green infrastructures in the Turin metropolitan area. An integrated territorial vision shall be rooted in nature-based solutions and landscape ecology, building on ecosystem services.
The local activities started on the 19th of March 2018 with a public event at the Castle of La Mandria, bringing together local administrators, the Metropolitan City of Turin, the Piedmont Region, stakeholders, professionals and members of the local community. During the workshop, the planned pilot project activities were introduced, including a presentation of the proposed methodology for sustainable planning of green infrastructures. This methodology is characterised by an innovative multi-scale approach, in which a vulnerability and resilience analysis of landscape-environmental systems forms a basis for green infrastructure planning. Included in the activities is a participatory assessment of the ecological, environmental, social and economic benefits of green infrastructure. In addition, a system for implementing green infrastructure, integrating the assessment, planning and sustainable management of metropolitan green infrastructure, will be developed. Finally, we will seek to have this management system certified according to EMAS standards (http://ec.europa.eu/environment/emas/index_en.htm).
