Results of the Testing and pilot production of biochar

Feb 29, 2024

Alps4GreenC is proud to announce the successful completion of our crowdsourcing campaign, engaging stakeholders across Austria, Slovenia, and Italy 🍀. Through careful evaluation and practical testing, we’re unlocking the potential of biomass residues for sustainable biochar production. Learn more about our journey towards a greener future.

Following the lab and pilot tests, the generated biochars underwent meticulous analysis at NIC to evaluate their suitability for sustainable use in both agriculture and the steel industry. Additionally, external analysis was performed by the Water&Life Lab in Italy, in collaboration with project partner unibz.
The biochars underwent thorough examination, including elemental analyses (C, H, N, S), assessment of moisture and ash content. The higher heating value was calculated using Milne’s formula. Furthermore, the biochars underwent characterization through X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetry (TG), pH measurements, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.
These findings mark a significant step forward in the quest for environmentally friendly carbon production and underscore the project’s commitment to exploring sustainable solutions. The data collected through these analyses will contribute to the broader understanding of green carbon’s potential applications in agricultural field and steel industry furnaces, paving the way for eco-friendly practices in various industries.
