Rivers provide clean drinking water for human use and irrigation for agriculture, they are home to many organisms and their power helps us to produce energy. Nevertheless, they are also vulnerable ecosystems affected by conflicting human aims and lacking appropriate protection. The project SPARE aimed at sharing, adapting and capitalising strategic planning and river management experiences across different regions and governance levels. It contributed to a further harmonisation of human use requirements and protection needs. Nine project partners showed how strategic approaches for the protection and management of rivers could be improved across administrative and disciplinary borders. The project raised awareness about the multiple services provided by Alpine rivers, as well as about their vulnerability.

Handbook to Integrated Water Management in the Alpine RegionToolThe handbook provides basic information on what approach to take in implementing practices to comply with the principles of integrated water Management. The handbook lists the bases to understand the concept of integrated water management and key aspects to consider in order to correctly plan our own practice or to recognise practices in line with the concept of integrated water management in all the phases from the conception to the implementation in the space. Thus, it provides essential guidance and cases of good practices, including the guidelines on the areas requiring special attention when planning new activities, covering the phases from implementing policies and strategic planning to planning and implementation of particular projects
