On March 23, 2026, the Chair of Hydrology and River Basin Management at TUM hosted the second A-DROP stakeholder workshop, bringing together 16 representatives from water authorities, environmental agencies, municipal utilities, fisheries associations, and research institutions. Within the A-DROP project, the TUM team develops an ensemble-based hydrological modelling framework for the Upper Isar basin to support drought-resilient hydropower management decisions. The Upper Isar is currently at a critical decision point: the concession of the Walchensee hydropower plant expires in 2030, opening a rare and time-bound window to renegotiate the water diversion regime in line with ecological requirements and a changing climate. The workshop therefore pursued two goals: the participatory development of concrete management scenarios for the Upper Isar post-2030, and the collection of stakeholder requirements for the project’s planned drought management tool.
The discussions highlighted that stakeholders across institutional backgrounds share clear and aligned priorities: restoring more natural flow dynamics, ensuring ecological integrity, and striking a durable balance between hydropower generation and environmental requirements. Building on these shared goals, four groups developed concrete, implementable management scenarios for the Upper Isar post-2030 that reflect the full diversity of perspectives represented in the room. The developed scenarios will be simulated within the A-DROP modelling framework across a range of climate projections, contributing to more sustainable and resilient water management in Alpine river basins.
