Description
The first meeting of the Local Working Group (LWG) for Pilot 2 of the A-DROP project in Avoriaz took place on Monday, April 20. The aim of this meeting was to present the project to the extended group of local stakeholders involved in the pilot area and to initiate a collective reflection on water uses across the Morzine–Avoriaz territory. Pilot 2 of the A-DROP project, part of Work Package 2 (WP2), is led by INRAE in collaboration with ABEST. It focuses on ski resorts and aims to simulate future water availability, compare it with different water uses, and identify potential tensions in a context of climate change. The Local Working Group serves as a platform for dialogue between local stakeholders and project researchers. Its objective is to co-produce the knowledge needed to better anticipate water management under conditions of resource stress.
This meeting brought together around ten participants, including researchers, technicians, consultants, water users’ representatives, and elected officials. It provided an opportunity to establish a shared overview of water uses in the area. These uses are diverse and specific to a mountain territory, including snowmaking, drinking water supply strongly influenced by seasonal tourism, pastoral activities, and the maintenance of aquatic ecosystems. The data collected were presented and discussed with participants. The discussions also helped advance the preparation of the hydrological simulations to be carried out, particularly through exchanges on defining the most relevant study area. Discussions also addressed the origin of water resources (multiple abstraction points and reservoirs), their strong seasonal variability, and regulatory constraints related to drought episodes (including potential reductions in withdrawals and usage restrictions). Recent experiences of water stress, particularly during the summers of 2022 and 2025, highlighted the need for anticipation and coordination among stakeholders.
This first meeting therefore represents a key step in establishing a collaborative approach aimed at improving the understanding and management of water resources in ski resorts under climate change.
