A-DROP Stakeholder Workshop at TUM

Feb 19, 2025

On February 17, 2025, the A-DROP project hosted a stakeholder workshop at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), bringing together 23 representatives from hydropower operators, environmental organizations, ministries, associations, and research institutions.

After an introduction by Prof. Dr. Markus Disse, Moritz Wirthensohn presented Pilot 3 of the project, which focuses on hydropower management under drought conditions.
Participants completed a questionnaire highlighting their interests, expectations, and potential contributions. Key concerns included climate change impacts on water availability, groundwater recharge, hydropower, and ecological sustainability. Stakeholders emphasized the need for improved hydrological models, reliable drought scenarios, and practical recommendations for sustainable water use in the Upper Isar.
Interactive group discussions identified major challenges such as conflicts between water users, gaps in water withdrawal data, and the need for better cooperation between stakeholders.

The role of hydrological models in decision-making was stressed, along with the importance of balancing hydropower production with ecological requirements, such as maintaining minimum flows and ensuring habitat quality. Stakeholders called for enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration, independent expert opinions, and clearer communication of scientific findings to policymakers and the public.
The workshop concluded with a strong consensus on the necessity of ongoing dialogue and cooperation. Many participants expressed interest in future meetings and continuous engagement within the A-DROP project to support sustainable water management and climate resilience in the Alpine region.
