World Apple Day was an initiative launched in 1990 by the British Organization Common Ground. Its purpose is to recall a wide range of apple varieties that people have created over the years through the history of apple breeding and also to recall the importance of orchards for the landscape and the preservation of biodiversity.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia - Chamber of Agricultural and Food Enterprises (CCIS-CAFE), one of the two Slovenian partners in the AlpBioEco project, is committed to drawing attention to the traditional quality fruit varieties that are produced in Slovenia by celebrating World Apple Day. In collaboration with the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia and the Maribor Fruit Centre, it carried out various actions (Preparation of different varieties of Slovenian apples for employees; leaflets with recipes; presentation of World Apple Day).
CCIS – CAFE, our AlpBioEco project partner, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food of Slovenia conducted also a sensory research entitled Crazy on apples "Izbrana kakovost" among students from different Slovenian faculties. This research made it possible to assess and define the apple value chain, one of the objectives of the AlpBioEco project, while raising awareness of apple consumption among young people in Slovenia. The students tasted ten different varieties of Slovenian apples and ranked them according to their likeability.
