The 2018 edition of the Annual Report of SNPA (Sistema Nazionale per la Protezione dell’Ambiente, Italian National System for the protection of the Environment, that includes all Italian Regional Agencies for the protection of the environment -ARPAs- and ISPRA, the Superior Institute for the Environmental Protection and Research) has been presented in Rome on February 27th 2019.

The Ecological status of surface water ecosystems is still critical: the last update data (2016) highlight that only the 43% of the rivers reach the stated quality goal (38 % good and 5 % high) while the 41% presents a worse Ecological status and the 16 % has not been classified.

The situation of the lakes is worse than that of the rivers, with only the 20% presenting an Ecological status in line with what stated in the Water Framework Directive (3% high and 17% good) while the 39% is still far from reaching this goal (for the remaining 41% insufficient data are available for an assessment of their ecological status).
