World Desertification and Drought Day 2025

Jun 17, 2025

Did you know? Every year on June 17, we mark Desertification and Drought Day to raise awareness about the importance of healthy land and to encourage international action to combat land degradation and drought.
This year’s theme—“Restore the land, Unlock Opportunities”—invites us to reflect on how sustainable land use and collective action can restore soil fertility, safeguard natural resources, and strengthen our environment’s resilience to droughts.
Drought is no longer a distant or rare phenomenon—it is becoming a frequent and pressing challenge that demands shared responsibility across all sectors of society.
In support of this mission, our project partner ARSO (Slovenian Environment Agency) is expanding the observance of this day into a week of awareness, connection, and concrete action. This initiative is a powerful reminder that meaningful change does not happen in a single day—but is the result of continuous, long-term commitment.
What can each of us do to protect and restore healthy land?
Small, everyday choices can add up to a big impact—reducing soil sealing, preventing erosion, supporting sustainable agriculture, and being mindful of how we use land and water.
Let this week be a call to action: reviving land means unlocking a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
