Alplakes Wins Swiss National Prize for Open Research Data 2025

Dec 1, 2025

We are pleased to announce that Alplakes platform, managed by DiMark Project Partner Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology (EAWAG), has received the Swiss National Prize for Open Research Data 2025. The award recognises innovative and transparent use of open data, with each winning project receiving 10,000 CHF.

Alplakes earned the award for its open and innovative approach to lake monitoring, combining remote sensing data and models into a unified, user-friendly platform that provides high-quality lake information to researchers, water professionals, and the public.

DiMark team congratulates James Runnalls and the entire Alplakes team at EAWAG for this well-deserved achievement and looks forward to continuing the collaboration as the platform evolves and expands throughout the project.

Relevance for DiMark

Over the past months, EAWAG has integrated all DiMark key lakes – and additional partner suggestions – into the Alplakes platform.

The platform will support DiMark by providing a user-friendly visualization tool of the Alpine region, allowing inspection and comparison of water conditions based on key freshwater indicators, with features shaped by feedback from DiMark workshops.
