From 2 to 4 December 2025, the online Alpine Winter School 2025 gathered 31 participants from across the Alpine Region for an intensive three-day online programme dedicated to understanding how markets and business models can support Forest Ecosystem Services (FES) and foster sustainable forest management.
Deep-diving into Forest Ecosystem Services, markets and policies
The first day introduced the foundations of Forest Ecosystem Services from both natural science and socio-economic perspectives. Participants explored the social value of FES, along with practical tools for designing viable and sustainable business models capable of supporting forest multifunctionality.
The second day was fully hands-on thanks to the Forest EcoValue Lab, where participants worked in teams on real Alpine forest case studies.
Despite the limited time available, the groups managed to collaborate remarkably well, producing inspiring, insightful and highly promising results. Their solution pitches demonstrated creativity, a strong grasp of the concepts introduced on Day 1, and a clear willingness to transfer these tools into real-world forest contexts.
On the third day, the focus shifted to policy and stakeholder engagement. Participants discussed the opportunities and challenges of developing ecosystem service markets in the Alpine Region, considering both top-down and bottom-up approaches. The lively exchange highlighted the importance of cross-sectoral dialogue to advance forest-related innovations and governance models.
