Driving Circular Innovation Across Borders: Circular Solutions in Textile & Food

Oct 29, 2025

Salzburg, October 23, 2025 — A dynamic and inspiring afternoon unfolded at the joint event hosted by the University of Salzburg and Salzburg University of Applied Sciences (FH Salzburg GmbH), where circularity took center stage. The gathering brought together a diverse mix of stakeholders from academia, industry, policy, and civil society to explore how cross-border collaboration and innovation are shaping the future of circular economy in the Alpine region and beyond. A professional illustrator captured the entire event graphically, creating a visual record of the discussions and tasting experiences—adding a creative layer to the knowledge exchange.

Setting the Stage for Circular Transformation

The event opened with a warm welcome by Christine Vallaster (University of Salzburg) and Eva Lienbacher (Fachochschule Salzburg GmbH), who jointly moderated the session. They introduced the three hosting Interreg projects (Interreg Alpine Space CEFoodCycle, Interreg Danube Region TEX-DAN, Interreg Italia-Austria FOODIS), each driving circular innovation in textiles, food systems, and digital transformation.

The rectors of both universities (Bernhard Fügenschuh, Rector University of Salzburg, and Dominik Engel, Rector & Managing Director FH Salzburg GmbH) emphasized the strategic importance of circularity for Salzburg and the broader Alpine region. They highlighted how joint projects not only build bridges between academia and practice but also ensure that knowledge is transferred to students, empowering the next generation to lead the circular transition.

Strategic Frameworks & Practical Outcomes: Advancing Circularity in Europe

Christina Bauer, Head of the Department for Regional Development and EU Regional Policy Salzburg State Government talked about the relevance of circularity in the Alpine Region. Case studies from FOODIS and CEFoodCycle showcased how digital tools can reduce food waste and improve resource efficiency. The textile sector was also spotlighted through TEX-DAN, which shared best practices for scaling circular textile innovations from pilot to market.

Panel Discussion: Cross-Border Learnings & Policy Implications

A lively multi-stakeholder panel discussion brought together voices from SMEs, large enterprises, NGOs, and policy makers. Topics ranged from collaboration barriers and consumer transparency to future innovations like AI and recycling infrastructure. The need for binding policy frameworks and the role of education in shaping future professionals were recurring themes.

Testing & Tasting: Networking

The evening concluded with a vibrant “Testing and Tasting” experience. Attendees sampled circular food products and engaged with project teams at interactive exhibition stands. The CEFoodCycle booth drew significant attention, with visitors tasting circular food products and exploring the FoodCycle.ai tool live while discussing its potential to reduce food waste.
