Slovenia aligns circular food action with SDG 12.3 and national policy frameworks

Sep 8, 2025

Slovenia supports circular economy goals in the food sector through a range of strategic documents and initiatives aligned with SDG 12.3 — halving per capita global food waste by 2030.

One of the key frameworks is the national strategy Respect Food, Respect the Planet, adopted in 2021, which outlines measures to reduce food loss across the supply chain, promote consumer awareness, and enhance food donation networks. In addition, Slovenia’s CAP Strategic Plan (2023–2027) integrates agroecological and regenerative farming practices, supporting the reuse of food system byproducts and shorter supply chains. Together, these efforts create an enabling policy environment for circular food initiatives.

Within this context, the CEFoodCycle project’s pilot activities in Slovenia provided practical examples of how policy goals can be implemented on the ground. By upcycling waste streams into high-value inputs such as animal feed and cosmetics, the pilots demonstrate how circular innovation can address both environmental and economic challenges in the food sector.
