Industrial Transformation Towards Circularity – The Cradle-ALP Project
The Alpine region combines a long-standing industrial tradition with rich natural resources and a strong network of small and medium-sized enterprises. At the same time, it faces urgent environmental challenges and increasing demands for sustainable production. In response to these needs, the Cradle-ALP project was launched under the Interreg Alpine Space programme to accelerate the shift from linear production models to circular, cradle-to-cradle value chains.
Over the past years, partners from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, and Switzerland have worked together with more than 250 companies and research organisations. Through practical tools, workshops, matchmaking events, and tailored mentoring, SMEs were supported in exploring circular business models, applying life-cycle assessment methods, and designing innovative solutions for a more sustainable future. The project placed particular emphasis on five sectors that are crucial for the Alpine region: chemicals and materials, polymers and composites, packaging, textiles, and wood and furniture.
As the project now approaches its conclusion, it showcases how collaborative networks, strategic guidance, and hands-on tools can empower companies to embrace circularity. The results highlight not only the progress made in the Alpine region but also the potential for scaling these approaches to strengthen the competitiveness and resilience of European industries.
The Cradle-ALP experience demonstrates that circular transformation is both an environmental necessity and a business opportunity. By fostering cross-sectoral and transnational cooperation, the project has laid important foundations for future initiatives that can build on these achievements and carry them forward.
