As climate change continues to reduce snow reliability, low- to medium-altitude Alpine tourism destinations face increasing ecological and socio-economic challenges. To address these, the BeyondSnow project has developed Transition Strategies for ten Pilot Working Areas (PWAs) across six Alpine countries.
These strategies provide guidance for communities and stakeholders in adapting to climate change, reducing dependency on snow-based tourism and identifying sustainable pathways for the future. They are the result of extensive participatory processes involving local and regional actors, co-design laboratories, surveys and interviews, combined with the analysis of socio-economic, climate and tourism data.
Each Transition Strategy follows a shared structure, typically including:
- an overview of the project and methodology
- a status quo analysis of the PWA
- results of co-design processes and stakeholder inputs
- a shared vision and objectives
- an implementation plan with concrete measures
Transition Strategies have been produced for the following PWAs:

All strategies are available in the local languages of the PWAs together with supplementary action plans.
