As part of our efforts to promote the circular transformation of the built environment in the Alpine region, the Bauhalps project (Interreg Alpine Space) participated in the Decorator project (Interreg Danube Region) workshop held on May 16 at the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The workshop was organized by the University of Nova Gorica as part of the Decorator – Pilot 5: National Laboratory initiative, which shares similar goals in the Danube region to those of Bauhalps in the Alpine context.
Together with representatives from the construction and cultural sectors, we discussed circular strategies within the production chain and the role of art in sustainable building. Particular focus was given to the reuse of materials, aesthetic quality, and design innovation.
A central topic was the aesthetic upgrade of iconic socialist-modernist buildings—especially those currently used or potentially usable by the University of Nova Gorica. These reinforced concrete and prefabricated structures hold significant architectural and cultural value for the broader Danube area.
Through an interdisciplinary approach, we explored transformation strategies for these buildings—from interior adaptations and aesthetic improvements to the design of new architectural elements. The goal: actionable strategies for circular renovation and visual revitalization.
The collaboration between Bauhalps and Decorator projects demonstrates how cross-border initiatives can complement each other and jointly shape a more sustainable, inclusive, and design-driven European future.
Stay tuned as we continue to build bridges between innovation in the Alpine and Danube regions—where creativity, construction, and culture come together to shape spaces that reflect the values of tomorrow.
