See all the deliverables from the ASTER project

Apr 9, 2026

The EU funded ASTER project aims to harmonize waste reduction efforts in the Alps, focusing on outdoor products by improving policies, raising awareness, and facilitating practical solutions through tools, training, and regional cooperation. The projects’ overall objective is to shift towards a circular and resource-efficient economy in the outdoor sport sector, contributing to carbon neutrality and a resource sensitive Alpine region.

On this page, you will find all the deliverables for the project from WP1 to WP3:

💡WP1. Characterizing waste prevention and management: to increase knowledge on the geographical, institutional, and technical framework of preventing and managing textile and plastic waste in the Alps. Achieved by mapping data, challenges, and potential for R-strategies.

  1. ➡️ R-Strategies and their use in ASTER: definitions and understanding

As a main tool, the ASTER project suggests implementing the 5R strategy to minimize waste before (refuse, reduce) and after (reuse, recycle, repair/repurpose) it´s creation (Interreg Alpine Space, 2024). Within the ASTER project application, the 5R strategies used have not yet been standardised.

2. ➡️Mapping circular and textile actors in the Alps: mapping the state of alpine solutions for circular products

The economy of the Alpine Region is strongly intertwined with the textile and plastic industries, which play a crucial role in supporting various sectors, including the production of essential goods for outdoor activities and tourism (Modica 2022, Šrimpf Vendramin et al. 2024, Lambracht and Chilla 2024).

3. ➡️ Mapping Economic Flows & Gaps in the Alps: mapping the state of alpine solutions for circular products

Textiles and plastics play a crucial role in the Alpine Region’s economy. Several regions, particularly including Northern Italy, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alps region and Germany, have a long tradition in textile production (Modica 2022, Šrimpf Vendramin et al. 2024, Lambracht and Chilla 2024).

4. ➡️ Regulations and economic policies for waste prevention and management in the Alps: mapping the state of alpine solutions for circular products

This report presents a policy overview of the legislative, institutional, and economic frameworks that influence waste prevention and management in the Alpine region.

5. ➡️ Mapping institutional dynamics in the Alps: mapping the state of alpine solutions for circular product

Textile and plastic materials are fundamental to the Alpine economy, supporting key mountain products such as sports and outdoor clothing and equipment, as well as infrastructure (Modica 2022, Šrimpf Vendramin et al. 2024, Lambracht and Chilla 2024).

💡WP2. Alpine pathways to better prevent and manage waste: based on the R-strategies, prototypes for outdoor jackets and new circular business models are being developed and tested. The goal is to avoid textile and plastic waste and create scalable solutions for the outdoor industry.

💡WP3. Solutions transfer to the ecosystem: developing and promoting solutions to implement R-strategies fostering circular and resource-efficient value chains for textile and plastic products, particularly those used in mountain
applications.
