On August 28th Waterwise will be part of the Glaciers’ Caravan campaign stop in the Zugspitze area.
The Glaciers’ Caravan is an awareness campaign led by Legambiente Alpi, its main goal being to report on the health of Alpine glaciers and connected resources and to ask for concrete actions to protect them. On its sixth edition, the campaign comes to Zugspitze, to investigate the state of the glacier.
Zugspitze and River Partnach, which waterflow depends on the local headwaters, are one of the Waterwise project pilot areas, and last February we held our first stakeholders workshop in Garmisch-Partenkirche.
Six months later, the Waterwise project comes back here to hold a public event together with the Glaciers’ Caravan to present the first transnational results back from our first year, specifically reporting on results from the French and German workshops.
Starting from this Spring, Waterwise project partner have also started to collect water samples from the different pilot areas: these data will support the creation of the co-designed online toolbox, together with the socioeconomic data gathered from the workshops, which will be the project main outcome.
Dr Pascal Pirlot from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, one of the project partners coordinating activities in the area, will represent the consortium. During the event a translator will provide translation from Italian to German and viceversa.
Waterwise is pleased to share its first results at the end of the first year (the project is expected to finish in 2027) and to do it in collaboration with the Glaciers’ Caravan, an initiative with which it shares goals and priorities. This is not the first time they collaborate: on the 2nd of August, some project representatives joined the launch event of the 2025 campaign edition in Passo del Tonale, beneath the Presena glacier, in Italy. Waterwise joined the Manifest for a European Governance for Glaciers and Connected Resources, promoted, among others, by the Glaciers’ Caravan.
Together, our goal to preserve the Alpine area and its connected resources is closer and closer.
