📖 “Bridging the local–global divide: strategic embedding in the alpine wool sector” has been published in Geografiska Annaler B.

New publication for AlpTextyles research is available in Geografiska Annaler B. Developed by Markus Lambracht, Tobias Chilla, and Carola Sommer from our project partner FAU, the article explores how regional textile economies can regenerate after disconnection from global production networks.

Using Alpine wool as a case study, the research rethinks regional textile value chains and reframes long-standing devaluation not as decline, but as an opportunity for renewed regional value creation. It highlights the role of regional lead firms, strategic embedding, and niche innovation in building resilient, circular, and place-based textile value chains.

Three key insights stand out:

🏔️ Regional lead firms matter. They play a critical role in mediating between global production dynamics and regional development needs.
⛰️ Strategic embedding offers a useful lens. Positioned between embeddedness and strategic coupling, it helps explain how regions can selectively reconnect on their own terms.
🗻 Niche innovation can be transformative. By bypassing dominant global standards, niche products create opportunities for renewed regional value creation.

These findings resonate strongly with AlpTextyles’ broader ambition: to rethink how heritage-based resources, including natural fibers, can support resilient, circular, and territorially grounded textile value chains in the Alpine region.
