Local Workshop on Youth Migration in Trentino Region

Feb 23, 2026

On 6 February 2026 at 5:30 p.m., the council chamber of the Municipality of Cembra-Lisignano hosted a local workshop of the Interreg Alpine Space OUT4INGOV project, dedicated to administrators and stakeholders from the Cembra Valley. The event aimed to present current youth migration dynamics in Trentino and to foster the development of new networks connecting young people and communities.

The workshop opened with an introduction to the objectives and progress of the OUT4INGOV project, presented by the Territorial Cohesion Office of the Autonomous Province of Trento (PAT). This initial session provided an overview of the project’s strategic framework and its role within the broader Alpine Space cooperation context.

A central moment of the meeting was a detailed analysis of youth emigration trends in Trentino, led by Frédéric Spagnoli, professor at the Université de Franche-Comté. His contribution offered an in-depth perspective on current mobility patterns, the motivations behind youth migration, and the socio-economic implications for the region.

Following this, Sabrina Berlanda and Maria Nardello, researchers at the Franco Demarchi Foundation, presented their report entitled “New Youth Emigration: A Research Study on the Phenomenon and Its Impact on the Trentino Region.” Their research shed light on emerging migration trends, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities linked to the increasing mobility of young people.

The second part of the workshop shifted the focus toward networks as tools for connection and collaboration. Particular attention was given to virtual meeting spaces designed to bring together Trentino residents around the world, encouraging the exchange of knowledge, professional experiences, and best practices.

In this context, Lorenza Fracalossi and Antonella Giordani of the PAT introduced the Mondo Trentino Village platform — the official community for Trentino residents worldwide — and presented the development of a dedicated section of the platform linked to the OUT4INGOV project. The initiative aimed to strengthen ties between local communities and the global Trentino diaspora, with a particular focus on youth engagement.

The workshop concluded with a contribution from community worker Tommaso Pasquini, who is responsible for animating the youth network in the Cembra Valley. He provided an overview of the current stage of network development and outlined future perspectives for strengthening youth participation and collaboration at the local level.

The event represented an important opportunity for dialogue, reflection, and collective planning. By combining research insights, institutional initiatives, and community-driven action, the workshop addressed youth migration not only as a challenge, but also as a catalyst for innovation, connection, and sustainable regional development.
