Future programme 2028+
Discover how we are designing the 2028–2034 programme — and how you can help shape it
Building on over 25 years of Alpine cooperation
The Interreg Alpine Space programme has supported transnational cooperation across the Alps since 2000. We are now preparing the next programming period (2028 – 2034) to continue delivering results for the Alpine region and its millions of inhabitants.
The preparation of the 2028–2034 programme is a collaborative process that will shape the future priorities, strategic approach and funding framework of the Interreg Alpine Space programme. Running from 2026 to 2028, the programming process brings together programme bodies, stakeholders and the European Commission to jointly define the programme’s direction and ensure it responds to emerging needs and challenges in the Alpine region.

The case for an Alpine space programme 2028 – 2034
The Alpine region faces shared challenges that no single country can address alone: rapid climate change and warming, rising natural hazards, biodiversity loss and ecosystem fragmentation, tourism under environmental and social strain, demographic imbalance and housing pressure, transport and transit impacts, the need to transform economy toward circular, climate‑resilient, and regionally rooted economic systems, complex multi-level governance needs. All of these challenges are deeply interconnected, meaning solutions must be integrated, long‑term, and coordinated across borders. The Interreg Alpine Space programme 2028–2034 will provide the framework for seven Alpine countries to address them jointly, ensuring the Alps remain a coherent, resilient and competitive part of the European territory.
How is the new programme being designed?
Designing a new programme is a structured, dynamic, multi-year journey. It starts with identifying key needs and challenges in the Alpine area, then moves on to shaping a shared mission, strategy, defining concrete measures, targets and expected results, and concludes with the programme’s submission to and adoption by the European Commission.

What is the analysis based on?
The programme’s strategic choices will be grounded in a shared evidence base. This includes harvesting the results of evaluations of the programme 2021-2027, stakeholder consultations and manifold papers and studies related to the cooperation area. Key findings and interim results will be published on this page as they become available.

Legislative framework
The Interreg Alpine Space programme 2028–2034 is being prepared within the European Union’s legislative framework for the next cohesion policy period. As the relevant regulations are currently under negotiation at EU level, the programme will be finalised once the legislative package is adopted.
The key milestones
The Task Force held its first meeting on 20 April 2026. Consequently, the programme launched the call for the procurement of services. The deadline for submission is set for Friday, 15 May 2026, followed by the evaluation and selection of proposals on 22 May 2026.
The next TF meeting is scheduled to take place in person on 9 July 2026 and will focus on defining the mission and overall purpose of the programme.

Who coordinates the process?
The programme design process is steered by a dedicated task force composed of representatives from Alpine Space partner countries, the European Commission and the Alpine Convention. The Managing Authority and Joint Secretariat coordinate the process and prepare the draft programme document, supported by external expertise where required. The Alpine Space Contact Points contribute to elaborating the new programme and to outreach and help ensure balanced participation across the seven Alpine Space countries.
Task force meetings take place at regular intervals throughout the process.
