Bled Water Forum: Acting for Lake Biodiversity

May 21, 2026

May, with its focus on special days dedicated to nature, reminds us — amid the rapid decline of biodiversity — of our responsibility and the urgency to act to preserve ecosystems on which both society and the economy depend.

As part of this year’s Bled Water Forum the lead partner NIB will also present DiMark activities at the expert panel Different methods for monitoring lakes in support of sustainable management of lake ecosystems,” which will take place on 3 June 2026 at Vila Bled and will bring together experts in monitoring, ecology, and water management, showcasing both traditional and cutting-edge approaches to lake ecosystem monitoring and their application in effective management.

It will bring together experts from the fields of water management, ecology, environmental monitoring, fisheries, nature conservation, research institutions and responsible public authorities. In addition to presenting various biomonitoring methods, the panel will offer insights into practical experiences, new research approaches, and opportunities to improve the sustainable management of Alpine lakes, while also providing an important platform for networking among experts and stakeholders.

Topics will include long-term monitoring results of Lake Bled (which is one of the key lakes in DiMark), biomonitoring approaches, ecological potential based on fish communities, biomanipulation, and European initiatives for reducing pressures on natural lake ecosystems.

Later in the afternoon, the wider public will be invited to the presentation of a draft action plan for nature-based solutions to protect Lake Bled. The draft plan builds on five stakeholder workshops organised in spring 2026, which opened dialogue on green infrastructure, wetlands, aquatic vegetation, shoreline protection and multifunctional green areas.
