Understanding compound and cascading climate risks in South Tyrol: Wipptal and Deutschnofen, Welschnofen, Aldein Municipalities

Feb 4, 2025

On October 30th and November 15th, 2024, two workshops of the X-RISK-CC project were held in Wipptal and the municipalities of Deutschnofen, Welschnofen, and Aldein in South Tyrol. Representatives from local authorities, forestry, civil protection, rescue services, and other key stakeholders came together to address the impacts of extreme weather events inducted by climate change.

Using climate scenarios set in 2040, the consequences of the concurrent occurrence of severe storms and high winds in the valleys were explored, such as extensive windthrown trees — like those seen during Storm VAIA—as well as the loss of protective forests, bark beetle infestations, and damage to large extents of forested areas.

Participants discussed solutions to improve resilience, including enhanced forest management, robust protective infrastructure, and strengthened collaboration across sectors before and during events. The workshops fostered a deeper understanding of climate risks and laid the foundation for tailored actions and actionable strategies to safeguard communities and ecosystems in South Tyrol.
