Description
As part of the Interreg Alpine Space BAUHALPS, EUSALP and ARGE ALP we invite you to a workshop on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at 3:00 PM - 3:45 PM on the topic Circular Construction and Renovation in the Alpine Region – From Discourse to Practice.
As part of its EUSALP presidency, the region of Salzburg aims to highlight the importance of circular renovation. This panel, featuring international experts, will explore various aspects of how existing buildings in the Alpine region can be reused and renovated with circular principles in mind. It will address both the challenges and opportunities within Alpine countries and demonstrate how a regional circular economy strategy can foster circular construction.
In a circular economy, the value of products and materials is preserved for as long as possible to ensure more efficient resource use. Circular construction involves rethinking the entire building process—from repurposing and renovating existing structures to using secondary building materials and incorporating lifecycle planning in new constructions when necessary.
The Alpine region faces unique challenges but also benefits from a long tradition of sustainable construction, as well as innovative architects and builders. This potential can be leveraged to establish the region as a model for circular construction and the reuse of building stock.
Despite this potential, circular construction has yet to achieve widespread market penetration or a significant scale-up effect. However, thanks to its rich building culture, expertise in construction, and technological know-how, the Alpine region is well-positioned to drive innovation and take on a global leadership role.
The panel will discuss how to accelerate this vision, the trends and obstacles that exist, and the key players and solutions needed to unlock the Alpine region's potential for circular construction.
