The Alps are warming twice as fast as lowland areas—and the impacts are no longer distant warnings; they are already happening. From landslides and floods to glacier retreat and increasingly intense precipitation, climate change is transforming the Alpine region. In our first project video, we highlight the key motivation behind X-RISK-CC:
Extreme weather events in the Alps are becoming more frequent and are often catching existing risk management systems off guard.
This pressing situation raises a vital question:
Is our current risk management approach still effective in the face of climate change?
To answer that, X-RISK-CC focuses on understanding:
• What changes related to extreme weather and natural hazards are already being observed
• Where these changes originate and how they are connected to climate change
• And most importantly—how we can better prepare for and respond to these risks in the future
This foundational video sets the stage for the rest of the project, outlining the scientific and societal drivers behind our work and the urgent need for climate-adapted risk management across the Alpine Space.
