Blue jeans with Made-in-the-Alps indigo

Jul 7, 2026

đŸ§” From Alpine plants to blue jeans: a Made-in-the-Alps natural indigo journey by project partner Mediplant!

Almost a year after AlpTextyles officially came to an end, the indigo natural dye developed by project partner Mediplant remains one of its most vivid legacies.

While the project has constantly demonstrated how traditional textile knowledge, local bioresources, scientific research, and innovation can come together to create new opportunities for more sustainable textile value chains, what is particularly exciting is that the story does not end there.

Building on the work initiated through AlpTextyles, our Audrey Kuhn and her team at Mediplant continue to explore the potential of natural dyes with an ambitious long-term vision: enabling the industrial production of jeans and textiles colored entirely with natural pigments, including the three primary hues — blue, red, and yellow. The development of locally sourced indigo is a key step in this journey, opening the possibility of producing fully ecological jeans and contributing to a more regional and resilient textile industry.

These achievements, insights, and collaborations are also helping to inform the next chapter. In this sense, WISER —the newly-funded Interreg Alpine Space project starting September 1, represents a natural continuation of the path initiated through AlpTextyles, building on valuable lessons learned around bio-based resources, sustainability, and innovation in Alpine value chains.

Some colors fade. Others leave a lasting mark. Thank you Radiotelevisione Svizzera (RSI) for covering this story (starting at 18:39): https://www.rsi.ch/info/svizzera/Jeans-blu-alpini-con-l%E2%80%99indaco-naturale-svizzero–3854483.html
