Lake monitoring methods in focus at Bled Water Forum 2026
On June 3 2026, an expert panel on different lake-monitoring methods in support of the sustainable management of lake ecosystems took place in Vila Bled, within the framework of the Bled Water Forum 2026. This year, the forum brought together participants from 64 countries, which represents a remarkable milestone in the development and international reach of the Bled Water Forum.
The panel 4 (led by DiMark coordinator NIB) brought together experts from Slovenia, Czechia, and Austria to present and discuss how traditional and contemporary biomonitoring, fish-based ecological assessment, and European restoration initiatives can contribute to better protection and management of lake ecosystems. Special attention was given to the long-term monitoring results of Lake Bled (one of DiMark’s key lakes) as a scientific basis for evidence-based water management, as well as to innovative approaches for assessing the effectiveness of different measures in lake ecosystems (including satellite data). The discussion also highlighted the importance of integrating scientific knowledge, practical experience, and European cooperation to address pressures on European natural lakes. These topics are closely aligned with the objectives of the DiMark project, which aims to improve understanding of freshwater systems through advanced monitoring, digital observation, and environmental indicators.
Events such as the Bled Water Forum provide an important space for knowledge exchange, cooperation and the development of more sustainable approaches to lake ecosystem management.
