Description
Alpine Winter School 2025: Markets and business models to support forest ecosystem services & sustainable forest management

How can Alpine forests continue to provide clean water, biodiversity, carbon storage, and recreation in the face of climate change, land abandonment, and rising management costs? And what kind of business models can help forest owners, managers, and policymakers ensure sustainable forest management while protecting these vital services?

The Alpine Winter School 2025, organized by Forest EcoValue, will tackle these pressing questions through a three-day online training. Participants will explore practical tools, innovative business models, and real-life case studies designed to support forest ecosystem services in the Alpine region. The program combines expert lectures, interactive exercises, case studies, and group discussions, creating a dynamic environment for learning and exchange across disciplines.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the Winter School, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the full value of their forest to local communities and society.

  • Identify and assess critical ecosystem services in Alpine forests.

  • Explore and adapt business models that sustain multiple ecosystem services.

  • Evaluate the ecological, economic, and social viability of these models.

  • Discuss practical opportunities and challenges for ecosystem service markets from both bottom-up and top-down perspectives.

Who should apply?

  • Actors directly active in the Alpine region: forest owners, managers, forestry operators, local policymakers, NGOs, and value chain actors working in Alpine contexts.

  • Actors working beyond the Alpine region but influencing it: national and international policymakers, organizations, or networks interested or engaged in shaping forest ecosystem service markets relevant to the Alpine area.
