New Policy Guidelines and Recommendations on Green Hydrogen for the Alpine Region is Now Available

Oct 20, 2025

A comprehensive set of policy recommendations for advancing green hydrogen in the Alpine region has been released within the EU Interreg Alpine Space AMETHyST project.

Developed through expert interviews, interregional exchanges and extensive desk research, the guidelines provide practical, forward-looking recommendations for decision-makers at the local, regional and national levels. They place strong emphasis on:

• multi-level governance
• public–private partnerships
• knowledge exchange and innovation
• citizen awareness and involvement

Green hydrogen plays a strategic role in Europe’s clean energy transition — particularly in energy-intensive industries such as industry, mobility and energy storage. With its strong renewable energy base and role as a major European transport and industrial corridor, the Alpine Space is exceptionally well-positioned to become a frontrunner in this transition. By advancing the recommended interventions, the region can accelerate decarbonization, secure industrial competitiveness, and contribute decisively to the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality goal.

The newly published Recommendations and Policy Principles for Green Hydrogen in the Alpine Space support regional actors in designing future-proof hydrogen strategies, aligning local action with national and EU priorities, and fostering cross-border cooperation to scale up infrastructure and investment.

The Policy Guidelines is now available for download on the AMETHyST website under the “Outcomes” section.

The document is available also in German, French, Italian and Slovenian, ensuring broad accessibility across the Alpine region.

The AMETHyST consortium invites all stakeholders working on hydrogen and energy transition to explore the publication and share it within their networks.
