Climate adaptation service package tested in Allgaeu region

Mar 12, 2025

Adapting to the unavoidable consequences of climate change is becoming increasingly important and should stand alongside effective climate protection measures. This challenge can only be addressed collectively with all local stakeholders. As part of the Alpine Space project ADAPTNOW a new climate adaptation service package was developed for municipalities and now implemented in the municipality of Fischen in Allgäu with a population of about 3.300 inhabitants. Local stakeholders from forestry, agriculture, tourism and disaster management were invited to a workshop on climate change adaptation.

Which climate change impacts can already be observed locally? Which climate change impacts do we expect by the end of the century? These questions were answered by the Climate Check for the municipality, based on regional climate model forecasts. Rising temperatures, more heatwaves, fewer frost and snow days, drier summers, and an increase in heavy rainfall events – all these factors lead to increasing risks in Fischen and the entire region.

In two working groups, the participating stakeholders assessed which climate change effects are most relevant for the municipality. Subsequently, it was determined where measures are already being implemented and which additional measures are deemed useful for adaptation. The proposed measures will be refined and prioritized by the municipality’s energy team. Results of the workshop have been presented in the local newspaper.
