Forest EcoValue concludes his journey: advancing forest ecosystem services in the Alpine region

Apr 30, 2026

After a successfully transnational cooperation, the Interreg Alpine Space project “Forest EcoValue” officially came to an end on 30 April 2026, marking the conclusion of a significant journey dedicated to the sustainable management and economic valorisation of Alpine forests.

Forest across the Alpine region provide essential ecosystem services – including carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, protection against natural risks, and recreational value. However, their long-term maintenance is increasingly challenged by rising management costs and limited economic returns. To address this issue, Forest EcoValue developed and tested innovative approaches to enhance the value of Forest Ecosystem Services (FES) building on public-private cooperation, sustainable business models and bio-based value chains.

Throughout its implementation, the project fostered strong territorial collaboration, bringing together public authorities, private sector actors, forest owners, research institutions and local communities. This collaborative effort enabled the co-creation and testing of solutions tailored to different regional contexts across the Alpine area.

Key project achievements include:

  • the development of methodologies and tools for the ecological and economic assessment of FES;
  • the establishment of a transnational network of Living Labs to test solutions in real-life settings;
  • the design of market frameworks and payment schemes for selected FES;
  • the elaboration of regional feasibility assessments and stakeholder-driven roadmaps;
  • the development of a Policy Memo, to support improved regulatory and policy conditions;
  • the implementation of capacity building actions, including regional workshops and a transnational Winter School. whoses dedicated training modules are available here: https://www.youtube.com/@Forestecovalue.

A key added value of Forest EcoValue lies in the transferability and replicability of its results. In fact, the tools and solutions developed can be applied beyond the project’s Living Labs, in other territories and contexts.

Although the project is now formally concluded, the partnership remains committed to continuing the dissemination and promotion of its results, supporting their uptake and replication in the years ahead.

All project results, tools and materials are publicly available in the Outcomes and Resources sections of the Alpine Space Programme website.
